In addition to being an essential decorative element in a garden, a pergola can also serve as a support for certain climbing plants such as vines, for example. In addition, the latter is an excellent natural coating and provides a beneficial shade for those who take a nap. However, to make the most of it, some basic rules must be respected.

The trellis, a vine plantation dedicated to the pergola or arbor

The pergola is part of these «hard» garden constructions including columns to fix horizontal beams to decorate its exterior. Over time, several ideas come to mind and some of them make it possible to achieve extraordinary things to decorate this place such as planting vines or other climbers. The placement of these plants seems quite different compared to the vines that grow in the fields. In this part, the vine is called a trellis, because instead of being cut with only a few branches attached to wires, it climbs on a support, namely, arbor, pergola, wall or tree.

Steps to succeed in planting a trellis

After setting up your pergola or arbor, the next step is to set up a vineyard. The latter must be chosen with a certain condition and its installation must take place in the rules of art so that it can live at least 50 years. In this sense, it is interesting to opt for a grape variety resistant to the main diseases of the vine, among others, mildew, black-rot. Then, the ideal period for planting a vine takes place in November and March, during their rest period when their leaves have fallen. The next step is to form a hole at the base of one of the uprights of the pergola and as drainage, it must be lined with pebbles or gravel. Loosen the removed soil and add a little compost and sand. Then, place the vine and gently remove a maximum of substrate. Untangle the roots without hurting them and then place the plant on the soil dome by spreading the roots around. The last phase consists of filling with the remaining soil and tamping with moderation, taking care that the grafting point is 5 cm above the ground.

Materials to choose for the construction of a trellis

In order for a trellis to have a lifespan beyond fifty years, it is essential to choose the right materials to enjoy it as long as possible. You can opt for metal in the first place, but it requires a special treatment to resist the weather. The most classic is wood, an exceptional element that is cheap. In addition, this type of material is easy to handle as desired. By offering it a suitable treatment, the wood can withstand any situation.

With regular maintenance, the trellis will undoubtedly benefit from excellent durability.
